Snippet Saturday – First Meetings

(Spirit of the Pryde received the Erotic Dreams Reader’s Choice award for Best Paranormal Romance of 2007. Enjoy the other Snippets authors whose links are the bottom.

The land below took Jason’s breath away as the pilot pointed out the beginning of Pryde lands. When the jet landed, he had yet to see the boundary marking the end. He’d never seen such beautifully wide-open spaces. The place seemed to go on forever. The land was green with trees, plenty of scrub and grasses that swayed with the wind. The Medicine Bow River wound its way through the property and sparkled under the morning sun as if it the fast-running waters were full of diamonds.

The second they touched down on the private airstrip, he popped the hatch and found a set of jetway stairs already rolling toward the opening.

At the bottom of those stairs stood a goddess.

“Hi, I’m Neesia Pryde. Thanks for bringing this equipment on such short notice.”

The woman’s voice flowed over him like rich chocolate. The sweet confection was obviously named after her beautiful cinnamon skin, which was clearly visible, compliments of a formfitting white tank top. She was dark, velvety and surely delicious. The thought of tasting her made Jason’s tongue dance around in his mouth until he snapped it closed. Lips, full and ripe, had him swallowing hard. And the golden hue of her eyes was simply arresting, like little orbs of the purest honey. The woman was, in a word, fine as hell. Well, that was three words, but it summed her up pretty well.

But judging from Neesia Pryde’s strong and fit physique, she’d probably deck him if he stepped up and started licking the side of her neck. With a mental shake, he reminded himself that he was here to do a job.

“Mr. DiCaplis, right?” she asked, probably wondering if he was some kind of dimwit, staring at her for at least thirty seconds without a word.

“Uh, yes, hi. Sorry, I’m not usually up at dawn and I’m a bit slow this morning,” he said with a bright smile. He extended his hand, noticing her strength as she firmly pumped it up and down. It had been a long time since he’d been with a woman. Most of the ones he came across were simpering annoyances. But Neesia seemed far from being such a woman. Damn, he would love to get to know her. And since he wasn’t investigating Neesia, there was nothing unethical about tempting the temptress, right?

By the way, had the gods invented blue jeans? Hers fit like a dream. The light blue fabric accentuated a trim waist and a firm, wide ass tapering down to endless legs. Damn, had he ever seen such a nice ass? Physically restraining himself, he practically shook with the urge to reach out and touch. Her rich, sinful voice snapped him out of his musings.

“Broglio here will help you unload the crates,” she said, motioning to an older, salt-and-pepper-haired man sitting on a small forklift. She held out her hand and jangled something on the end of her long fingers. He looked down at her hand and gulped.

Snap out of it, idiot. Hell, he was practically slobbering on himself, imagining the feel of those fingers. Mentally slapping himself in the back of the neck, he focused on her words and tried not to look at the yummy lips speaking them. If he kept this up, he’d blow his cover. Among other things.

“Here are the keys to the jeep over there,” she said, nodding her head toward a sporty-looking four-wheeler parked off to the side. “Just tell Broglio which crates you want brought up to the house and he’ll help you get them into the jeep. There’s plenty of storage space, but you don’t have to take it all up right now. Load whatever you don’t immediately need on the flatbed over there and bring it up to the house later. All right with you?”

“Sure, thanks.” She turned to walk away and his mind scrambled for something to say, anything to keep her from leaving. What the hell was wrong with him? Certainly he couldn’t be this hard up for a woman? Hell, who was he fooling? This was a terrible time for his cock to remind him how horny he was.

“Oh, I forgot,” she said as she stopped and turned to pin him with her light, tawny stare. Jason’s heart practically beat out of his chest. “All the wiring and setup for the new surveillance system is going to take a couple of weeks. We told your employer it would be best if you stayed here. Just follow Broglio back to the main house and we’ll get you settled, all right?”

“Uh, yeah. Sure. Thanks,” Jason mumbled, sounding like some goofy schoolboy as he dragged his eyes away from her smile. And those lips. Tempting was such an inadequate word.

“We’ll start tomorrow with the grounds around the house, then move out onto the ranch. A schematic is in the jeep for you to study.”

Waving at the captain who’d come out of the cockpit to help unload the cargo, she called out as she headed back to her own vehicle.

“Thanks for flying on such short notice, Harry! Come up to the house and get a bite to eat before you take off!”

The pilot grinned like a loon and bounded down the stairs. “Come on, boys, let’s put our backs into it.”

But Jason knew the man’s eagerness to get the unloading done had more to do with Neesia’s invitation to visit the house rather than a desire to get back in the air.

He couldn’t blame the man one bit.

Seeking Charlotte – Hearts of Fire Book 3

We have the awesome privilege of visiting with Charlotte Jones and Creed Lawson. Charlotte has a lovely garden and we’re enjoying the North Carolina sunshine at the height of Springtime. Also, their story comes out April 30, 2010, and I’ve been privileged to read an advance copy. Hot stuff, awesome plot!

Here’s the blurby bits for Seeking Charlotte, then we’ll get into our interview.

Creed Lawson knows Charlotte Jones is trouble from the moment she presses her lithe body to his and kisses him. But that doesn’t stop him from taking what she’s offering—a night of hot, uninhibited sex. But Creed hasn’t bargained for the feelings she stirs in him, nor the talk of crystals, demons and destiny.

Charlotte is an empath. The ability to feel people’s emotions has made it difficult for her to lead a normal life. At eighteen she received one of the eight pieces of the Heart of Fire, a crystal that contains untold power. She was told there was a male who held the other half of her stone, as well as a demon that coveted all the pieces of the crystal.

The demon has finally found her. But she knows that Creed is the special man she’s been waiting for. Charlotte is facing the fight of her life. Will Creed fight beside her or walk away?

Me: We heard stories about the Chosen and the Heart of Fire, but no one could really prove it was true. Can you tell us a little bit about the legacy behind that pretty piece of jewelry you’re wearing?

Charlotte: *Charlotte toys with the crystal hanging around her neck* Well, the legend goes that the Heart of Fire is a crystal of immense power created by the spiritual leaders of the lost culture of Atlantis. It was broken into eight different pieces. Each piece enhances the gifts of the person who owns it. When combined into four pairs, they contain great strength. When joined as one, their power is infinite. Or so the story goes. This crystal was a present, given to me on my eighteenth birthday by a very special woman.

Me: Charlotte, I understand you have three sisters and that you’re the most shy of the bunch. How difficult was it to break out of your shell, so to speak, considering you’ve just met the love of your life?

Charlotte: As an empath, being around people is hard for me. As a result, I spend a lot of my time by myself. My garden and my writing take up most of my time.

Creed: *butts in* But that was before you met me, babe.

Charlotte: *smiles indulgently* Of course it was. I was just about to say that being around Creed is totally different. We connect on every level. Not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. I find I don’t need to erect “walls” around myself in order to be able to function around him.

Creed: *with sexy grin on his face* We certainly do connect physically.

Me: Well, he sure is gorgeous. How would you describe your special man? Is he really as tough as he looks in spite of his love for jewelry?

Charlotte: *Laughs* Isn’t he just gorgeous. All that bronze skin and that silky black hair. And those dark, piercing eyes. *She shivers* Where was I? Of yes, Creed certain is tough. He’s had to be in order to do the jobs he’s done. Did you know he was a cop before he was a bounty hunter? But he’s really sweet underneath that hard exterior.

Creed: Babe, don’t tell them stuff like that. You’re going to ruin my reputation. And the crystal was a present from my grandfather. I don’t normally go for jewelry other than my watch.

Me: What kind of stuff do you two do for fun?

Charlotte: *blushes* I garden.

Creed: *slow grin spreads across his face* And I help her.

Me: Do you two have a favorite song? You know, one of those “Oooh, that’s our song” kind of thing?

Charlotte: *laughs* Not really. I enjoy more soothing Celtic music. Maybe some folk and easy listening.

Creed: Classic rock and roll all the way for me. The heavy beat and the pounding music really gets the blood pumping.

Me: Have either of you ever heard of NJ Walters? I understand she’s sharing your story with the world. What do you think about that?

Creed: She’s okay. If I didn’t trust her to get the story right I wouldn’t have shared it to her.

Charlotte: She’s a very lovely person. Very understanding and open to different possibilities. She’s actually a little empathetic herself. Of course, I’m not certain she even realizes it.

Me: Any plans to go on Oprah once NJ’s book about you two comes out?

Creed: Hell no. You think I want my life turned into a circus.

Charlotte: *giggles* I don’t think we need to worry about that. Our story will be labeled fiction. No one will truly believe everything we’ve been through. And that’s okay. Actually, it’s probably better that way. We enjoy our privacy.

Creed: *nuzzles Charlotte’s neck* We certainly do.

Me: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

Charlotte: Be sure to check out my sisters’ books. Mem’s story is by Ciana Stone called Memory’s Eye, Dee’s story is called Shards of Ecstasy by TJ Michaels, and Kenna’s story is Kenna’s Cowboy by Nicole Austin. They have their own amazing stories to tell. And you should check out other books by NJ Walters. She certainly tells some stories that will raise your blood pressure. lol

Creed: Hmmm…talking about her books is giving me some ideas. This interview is over.

*He scoops Charlotte into his arms and carries her into the house, closing the door firmly behind him*

Me: *looking at the closed back door with a big ole grin on my face* Well, I guess that concludes our interview with Charlotte and Creed. We know you’ll enjoy their book.

Snippet Saturday – Lost Love

In this Snippet, Dr. Carinian Derrickson is convinced she’s lost the one man that ever truly moved her. She’s dead wrong, but it doesn’t keep her from feeling the loss considering she doesn’t know he’s hasn’t dumped her.

Other than a glimpse of him from a distance around the facilities, Carin hadn’t seen Bix in three days. Why she’d expected him to pop up everywhere, she had no idea. Even at the gym she’d looked over her shoulder every now and again, hoping. Finally, she’d reprimanded herself for refusing to accept she’d been the recipient of a one-night stand. Okay time to forget him.

She was almost home when a sharp jolt of pain shot through her lower back as the muscles spasmed. Thoughts of Bix’s strong hands kneading the tension away popped into her head. So much for the two grueling hours spent throwing herself through every lower body exercise she could think of, all in an attempt to get her mind off the man. Obviously it hadn’t worked.

Rolling her eyes at her own ridiculousness, she screeched to a stop in her driveway and dragged herself into the house. She’d been alone for years, but she missed this man so much the only word she could think of to describe it was hollow. All this drama for a man she knew nothing about, other than he was a great lay? Yeah, a great one-time lay.

“Now see, that’s exactly what you get,” Carin grumbled to herself as she kicked off her tennis shoes inside the front door. “Getting all worked up ‘cause you thought that damned man was serious about you. Now look at you, feeling all stupid and disappointed.”

After a quick wash up she settled back in the thick, overstuffed cushions of the couch. A plate of untouched food congealed on the coffee table while her thoughts flew all over the place. One second she was thinking about the next steps for her serum, then her head filled with the images of a tall, dark-haired, gorgeous manly-man who’d put it down on her in the bedroom at the back of her labs earlier this week. She didn’t like it at all.

Carin sat up on the couch, snatched out of a comfortable doze by the ring of the doorbell. Startled, heart in her throat, she glanced towards the unlit fireplace at the clock over the mantle. Eight fifteen. Who the hell would come by her house after dark without calling first? Moving with silent caution she rose, grabbed the sturdy baseball bat next to the door and peeked through the viewing hole.

Snippet Saturday – Creepy

I think this week’s theme kinda speaks for itself…

EXCERPT from HATSEPT HEAT
Vampire Council of Ethics Book Three
by TJ Michaels, Copyright 2009
Samhain Publishing, Ltd.

Shinju knew she was being followed. At first she didn’t really care, actually eager to engage someone, anyone, just to work off some steam. But when her mind recalled exactly who, or rather what, was embroiled in her current life’s situation, she could have strangled herself. Max had been playing both sides of the fence with the vampires—friends with Clan Li on one hand, and doing deals with a human, rogue-associated, vamp drug dealer on the other. And the odds that the person tailing her was a little old Japanese lady in need of directions to the nearest fish market were slim to none.

Stupid, stupid, stupid!

Why in the world hadn’t she stayed at the hospital where it was at least assured that the vamps walking the halls were good guys? But nooooo, she just had to go walk it off, had to get away from everyone so she could think about things. When would she learn that getting away from everyone was exactly what she needed to stop doing? She had Kenoe now, along with all of his family and friends who’d already accepted her into the fold.

Oh well. Nothing to be done for it.

What she really needed right now was a weapon. Again, her mind shot back to the medical facility. Why? Because she happened to have a six-foot, muscle-packed, white-haired, katana-toting, deadly weapon that loved everything about her. A weapon who would give and do anything for her—Kenoe Hatsept. And where was he? Waiting for her to return to her brother’s hospital suite ready to give the doctors a decision about the blood transfusion. Not to mention the fact that she was supposed to be getting herself sated on hot coffee and perhaps a baker’s dozen of brownies.

Shinju held back the urge to slap herself in the head, then without looking back she took off at a dead run and ducked around the next corner into an alley. Chest heaving more from the burst of adrenaline than the short sprint, Shinju was faced with the possibility of her own mortality. If these were rogue vampires stalking her, without a full bond with Kenoe and the advantage of sharing his blood, she would be no match for them. Stronger and faster, they’d gut her in no time.

God, she didn’t want to die. All she’d needed was some time to get used to the whole vampire boyfriend thing. After spending a bit of that with Kenoe and company, Shinju wanted nothing more than to bond with him and get on with their no-doubt exciting lives. But here she was all alone in an alley about to face God-knows-what. Was she too far for him to hear her if she called? Only one way to find out.

Her right foot lashed out at the first pursuer to speed around the corner as she yelled for Kenoe with all her psychically non-talented might.

* * * * *

The exact second Shinju landed in trouble, her call rang inside him like a large bell. Seconds later, Slade called.

“This is bad, man. She’s being tailed by two rogues. One of them fits the description of the idiot who jacked Kimora in Shinju’s backyard. They’re closing in fast. Whoa! Carin and Tameth are right behind them.”

It took everything in him not to bellow into the receiver. After a couple of deep breaths that didn’t calm him at all, he snapped, “Get there now, Slade. I’m on my way.”

Kenoe shot out of his chair and voice dialed Bix and Alaan while bolting for the nearest exit. Relief warred with terror and flat-out rage. Slade, Tameth and Carin, all skilled fighters, would be on the scene to help Shinju. Didn’t change the fact that the woman had no business roaming around Roppongi district alone. Especially with her new knowledge that the ballpark in which the human race played was teeming with fanged people who wouldn’t hesitate to do her harm.

He followed Slade’s GPS transmission toward Shinju’s exact position. Kenoe prayed his natural speed would get him there before it was too late.
